The Effect of Socio-Economic Status of Elderly on Life Satisfaction: Focused on the Mediating Effects of Participation in formal and Informal Social Activities

|
The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effects of participation in formal and informal societal activities in the impact of subjective social status, which is the socio-economic status of the elderly, on life satisfaction of the elderly. The analysis data used in this study is the data from the 6th year of the KLoSA Survey on the Aging Research Panel which the Korea Employment Information Service surveyed in 2016 and distributed in 2018. the study was conducted on 1,391 elderly people aged 65 or older who had a spouse and children. The results of the study are as follows. First, the subjective level of consciousness of socio-economic status of the elderly has a positive(+) effect on the satisfaction of life of the elderly, and the higher the subjective consciousness, the higher the satisfaction of life. Second, the parametric effect of the participation of the elderly in the formal and informal social activities was supported by the hypothesis in the informal social participation activities in the relationship between the subjective level consciousness of the elderly and the life satisfaction of the elderly. The hypothesis of the formal social participation activity showed the result of unsupported.
The results of this study confirmed the subjective perception of life satisfaction and the importance of participating in social activities and suggested the necessity of social welfare intervention plan to activate participation of the elderly in social activities.
